Optics (Excerpt)

My first produced play. It is a story about a girl who is going blind. It is from her perspective with the audience seeing it through her eyes. As the play progresses, the stage gets darker. It won a gold key at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. It was also produced by Oakton High School in their Spring One Act Festival. They took it to competition in the Virginia High School One Act Competition where they made it to the district and regional rounds (2014-2017)


Lights up but not fully. It’s dimmer than the scene before. The wardrobe is still center stage. A gray arm chair rests in front of it. A knock sounds. MOTHER walks to the wings at stage left.


MOTHER

Heather, you have a visitor!


MRS. MULLEN enters with a casserole covered in tin foil. She keeps her gray coat wrapped around her as she steps to the arm chair at center stage and sits down. MOTHER stands on her left, watching the scene unfold with her arms crossed.


MRS. MULLEN

Hi, Heather. I hope you remember me. I’m Mrs. Mullen. I live next-door. I’m Robby’s mom. (Pause.) Well, anyway, I just wanted to see how you are feeling. How are your eyes? (Pause.) Ah, I’m glad to hear you still have some vision. (Pause.) It was a shock when we all heard about your condition. We just couldn’t believe it. (Beat.) You know, it’s actually kind of funny. When Robby came home from school and told us the news, my husband and I were actually on the couch, watching a Hellen Keller documentary. (Pause.) Well, I thought it was funny...
